2005年に音楽ジャーナリストで音楽オタクであるイアン・マーティンが立ち上げたレーベル、Call And Response Records。レーベル設立の際に、彼が掲げた事は大きく2つあります。1つは、Call And Response Recordsをポップとアンダーグラウンドの狭間を面白くかつ変わったアプローチで切り取ったレーベルにする事。それはつまり、Stiff、Factory、Muteレコードのような幅広く異なる範囲の音楽を取り扱いながらも、レーベルとして独創的なアイデンティティを持ったレーベルに育てるという事でした。2つめは、100作品リリース後に、レーベルをクローズすること。このアイデアは彼の出身地であるイギリス・ブリストルの伝説的なインディー・レーベル、Sarah Recordsからインスパイアされたアイデアです。

そのことを念頭に置き、Call And Response初リリース作品の型番はCAR-99とし、作品がリリースされるごとに型番はカウントダウンされてきました。レーベルは、ポストパンクの精神にインスパイアされ、様々なインディーロックを取り入れ、プレグレッシブ、エレクトロニック、ノイズロック、パンク、ニューウェーブに影響を受けています。現在、CAR-50に到達し、文字通りレーベルは「旅の途中」にあります。

この度、レーベルの「半分記念」というマイルストーンを祝うために、15年にわたる50リリース作品をテーマにした2枚組コンピレーションCD＆ZINEをリリースすることになりました！

ZINEには、日本インディーズやアンダーグラウンドミュージックシーンに対する想いをテーマに、レーベルと関係のある人々による記事・アートワークが掲載されています。コンピレーションCDは2枚組となっており、Disc 1「Well Done」は、Call And Responseアーティストによるセレクトされたレーベル内作品のお気に入り曲で構成されています。これまで数百のトラックがレーベルからリリースされてきましたが、このDisc1でレーベルの違った景色が見える事は間違いありません。Disc 2「Rare」では、文字通りレアな未発表曲やソロ音源を集めたものであり、レーベルを構成する多様な創造的才能に対する新鮮な洞察を与えることできるでしょう。

When he founded Call And Response Records in 2005, music journalist and massive music nerd Ian Martin knew two things. Firstly, he wanted a label that carved an interesting and unusual path between pop and underground. He admired labels like Stiff, Factory and Mute that released a wide range of different music while retaining a recognisable overarching identity as a label. Secondly, he wanted to put out 100 releases and then stop, an idea inspired by legendary indie label Sarah Records from his hometown of Bristol in the UK.

With that in mind, the first Call And Response release was given the catalogue number CAR-99 and the numbers have been counting down ever since, charting a course inspired by the ethos of post-punk and taking in a variety of indie rock, progressive, electronic, noise-rock, punk and new wave influences. With the label now having reached CAR-50, it is officially halfway through its journey. To celebrate this milestone, Call And Response has produced a double-CD compilation and zine reflecting on 50 releases over 15 years.



The zine features articles, stories and artwork by people connected with or close to the label, based on the theme of their feelings about the indie and underground music scene in Japan. The compilation is composed of two discs. In the first, “Well Done”, Call And Response artists select their own favourite tracks from other artists on the label and it works as a sort of oblique take on what a pop hit is, as viewed through the prism of the label’s lineup. The second disc, “Rare”, features rare, unreleased or solo recordings and provides a fresh insight into the diverse creative talents that make up the label.
