The Male Gaze

Formed in January 2018, The Male Gaze are the leading edge of feminist punk in the Philippines. Based around vocalist Mich Dulce, drummer Ristalle Bautista, and guitarists Ymi Castel and Mariah Yonic, the band distil decades of indie rock and riot grrrl music into three sharp, fun, angry, yet hopeful tunes that recall bands like Sleater Kinney and Bikini Kill.

 

With a diverse creative background — vocalist Mich Dulce is a successful fashion designer whose celebrity clients include Adam Ant and Lady Gaga, while guitarist Mariah Yonic directed the award-winning LGBT-themed sci-fi short film “The Last Gig on Earth” and wrote the script for “Eerie”, which premiered at the Singapore Internationakl Film Festival in 2018 — The Male Gaze are active in a variety of fields, seamlessly combining music, art and politics. They have gained attention and support for their activities protesting sexual harassment and working in projects that provide safe spaces for women. They have also performed at events such as Metro Manila Pride and Bankok Biennale, been featured by a variety of media including CNN, i-D magazine and the BBC. Meanwhile, their song “Someday” was a top 10 hit in  the Philippine charts.

 

P-iPLE

Formed in Tokyo in 2015, P-iPLE are a fiercely energetic punk 4-piece based around vocalist Madoka Kitabeppu, bassist Bav, guitarist Mayumi and drummer Yossy. Their music draws from the classic garage-rock-influenced sounds of the Clash or Buzzcocks, the distorted guitars of no wave acts like DNA and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, and the ferocious rhythms of hardcore.

 

As core members of the “Tension!” event, P-iPLE are at the centre of a new movement of Japanese noise-rock and experimental punk music, and have played all over Japan alongside bands like Melt-Banana, DMBQ and the UK’s Adrena Adrena. They released their debut mini-album “Do Do Do A Silly Travel By Bicycle Bicycle” from Call And Response in 2017, and contributed the song “I Can ’t Speak English” to the label’s “Throw Away Your CDs Go Out To A Show” compilation, which was praised by many music critics as one of Japan’s best albums of 2017.

フェミニストパンクを牽引する存在として2018年1月にフィリピンで結成された。 ボーカルのMich Dulce、ドラマーのRistalle Bautista、ギターのYmi CastelとMariah Yonicの4人から成る。

The Male Gazeはインディーロックやライオットガールのスピリッツを受け継ぎ、愉快さ、怒り、希望が均等に音に滲み出ており、Sleater KinneyやBikini Killを思い起こさせる。

多様性あるクリエイティブバックグラウンドがあることもこのバンドの特徴だ。ボーカルのMich Dulceは Adam AntやLady Gagaといったセレブリティをクライアントに持つファッションデザイナー、ギターリストのMariah YonicはLGBTをテーマにしたSFショートフィルムのコンペティションで受賞した「The Last Gig on Earth」を監督しており、2018年のシンガポール国際映画祭にてプレミア上映された「Eerie」の脚本も手掛けている。The Male Gazeは音楽、アート、政治をシームレスにつなげたフィールドで活動しているアクティビストの集団である。昨今でも、セクシャルハラスメントのプロテストや女性に安全な場所を提供するプロジェクト実施する活動をサポートしていることでも注目を集めている。彼女たちはメトロ・マニラ・プライドやバンコク・ビエンナーレでもパフォーマンスを行い、CNNやi-Dマガジン、BBCなど数々のメディアからもフィーチャーされており、彼女たちの曲「Someday」がフィリピンのチャートでTop10入りをした。

 

P-iPLE

2015年に東京で結成されたP-iPLEはボーカルのMadoka Kitabeppu、ベースのBav、ギターのMayumi、ドラマーのYossyの4人からなる獰猛でエネルギッシュなパンクバンドである。彼らの楽曲はクラッシュやバズコックスといったクラシックなガレージロックに影響されたものでありながらも、DNAやTeenage Jesus & The Jerksといったノーウェーブのディストーションギターをかき鳴らした荒れ狂ったハードコアサウンドでもある。

 

P-iPLEは「Tension!」イベントのコアアーティストであり、ジャパニーズノイズロック＆エクスペリメンタルパンクの新ムーブメントの中心に居て、Melt-BananaやDMBQ、Adrena Adrena(UK)といった国内外で活躍するバンドらとも共演を果たしている。2017年にCall And Responseレーベルよりミニアルバム「Do Do Do A Silly Travel By Bicycle Bicycle」をリリースし、「I Can ’t Speak English」を多くの音楽批評家から2017年の日本のベストアルバムと称賛された2017年のレーベルコンピ「Throw Away Your CDs Go Out To A Show」に提供した。
