The Buildings はフィリピン・マニラ出身の 4 人組で、1990 年代の影響を受けながらも今の時代の生活 の喜びや不安を表現した知的でメロディアスな楽曲・歌詞に定評があり、現世代の東南アジアにおける新星イン ディーバンドです。

2015 年にマニラで結成された The Buildings は、2 度もソールドアウトしたデビューアルバム「Cell-O Phane」でフィリピンのインディーシーンの第一人者として地位を確立しました。ティーンインディーカル チャー雑誌 Rookie でもフィーチャーされ、シンガポールのレーベル Middle Class Cigars からもアルバム を再リリースし、海外にもその存在を知らしめています。

The Buildings の楽曲は、Pavement、Wilco、Silver Jews、Yo La Tengo などの 1990 年代のオルタナティ ブロックやノイズポップの影響を受けており、現代世界の混乱と混沌をメロディックでメランコリーに、同 時にノイジーかつ楽しく解釈しているかのよう。新アルバム「Heaven is a Long Exhale」を聴くと、バンドがソングライターとしてもスタジオで成熟していっている様子が見て取れるが、カルト的デビュー作を生 み出した頃のような遊び心は決して手放してはいません。

本アルバムは、コロナパンデミックの影響を受けた作品で、対面環境で楽曲を作り込んでいく代わりに、ス タジオレコーディングの可能性を探求し、よりリッチできめ細やかなアレンジメントを施すことでメロディ ーと歌詞がより洗練され豊かになるよう制作されました。

この奇妙なパンデミックにおいて、バンドはデジタルの世界に住んでいることを認識していましたが、結果 的にアルバムの楽曲が暖かく親密な音になりました。ビデオゲームをモチーフとしたミュージックビデオ 「Climb Over the Gate」と「Flesh and Code」は、このテーマに触れています。6/6(日)開催のアルバムリリースパーティーは、オンラインオーガナイザーの Club Matryoshka によってサンドボックスオンライン ゲーム「マインドクラフト」内のプライベートサーバーでホストされます。

Hailing from Manila in the Philippines, The Buildings are among the rising stars of the current generation of Southeast Asian indie, with their intelligent, melodic songwriting that draws on influences from the 1990s but uses them to express the joys and anxieties of contemporary life.

The band made an impact on their local scene with their fuzz-pop debut "Cell-o-phane", now twice sold-out in both its original release and cassette re-release from Singapore label Middle Class cigars.

Drawing on influences from 1990s alternative rock and noise-pop including Pavement, Wilco, Silver Jews and Yo La Tengo, The Buildings’ music that tries to make sense of the confusion and chaos of the modern world in a way that is melodic, melancholy, raucous and joyous. Largely recorded during the pandemic lockdown conditions of 2020 and early 2021, this new album sees the band maturing and developing their skills, both in the studio in their songwriting, without letting go of the playfulness that characterised their cult debut.

This influence of the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the album, with the loss of the live environment to hone songs in forcing the band to greater explore the possibilities of the studio resulting in richer and more subtle arrangements, as well as colouring the worldview expressed in many of the lyrics.

The strange situation the band found themselves in is also reflected in the way a sense of warmth and intimacy is intertwined with the growing importance of the digital world. The music videos for "Climb Over the Gate" and "Flesh and Code" both use video game motifs (from RPG Maker and The Sims respectively), while they organised the album’s release party together with online organiser Club Matryoshka on a private server in the game Minecraft.
